Burlington, VT – A snow squall warning has been issued early Tuesday morning, affecting multiple counties in northern New York and Vermont. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington reports that intense bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds are expected to create whiteout conditions, making travel hazardous.
According to the NWS, the snow squall was detected at 3:30 a.m., extending from 24 miles north of North Derby, Vermont, to Riverview, New York, and moving southeast at 35 mph. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are anticipated, along with near-zero visibility due to blowing snow.
The warning is in effect until 4:30 a.m. and impacts southern Clinton, Franklin, Essex, and St. Lawrence counties in New York, as well as several counties in Vermont, including Chittenden, Franklin, and Lamoille. Major highways affected include portions of Interstates 87, 89, and 91.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible and exercise extreme caution. Those on highways are advised to find a safe location, such as a rest area, to wait out the squall.
