Tucumcari, NM – A snow squall warning remains in effect until 1:45 PM MST for northeastern Curry, northeastern Guadalupe, and central Quay counties. Intense bursts of snow and strong winds are creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, the snow squall was observed at 1:15 PM, stretching from six miles northeast of Newkirk to 12 miles north of Bellview. It is moving south at 25 mph, bringing wind gusts over 35 mph and whiteout conditions.
Locations affected include Tucumcari, San Jon, and Newkirk. Interstate 40 between mile markers 292 and 373 and State Road 104 near mile markers 102 to 105 are expected to be especially impacted.
Drivers are urged to slow down and prepare for sudden visibility drops and icy roads. The NWS warns that standing near roadways during a squall can be deadly, as vehicles may lose control. If involved in an accident, move away from the road when safe.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel until the squall subsides and conditions improve. Stay updated through local weather alerts.
