Duluth, MN – A significant snowstorm is set to sweep across northeast Minnesota on Thursday, with heavy snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour expected during the morning commute. Areas including the Brainerd Lakes, Twin Ports, and the I-35 corridor will see accumulations ranging from 2 to 6 inches, with localized totals exceeding 8 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin in the early morning hours, moving eastward toward Lake Superior and intensifying between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Forecasters are urging travelers to prepare for reduced visibility, slippery roads, and difficult driving conditions during peak morning travel times. Wind and lake enhancement could push snow totals higher along the North Shore and Bayfield Peninsula.
The heaviest snowfall is anticipated to continue into the early afternoon Thursday before tapering off by late afternoon. Moderate snow accumulations will linger through the evening. Those traveling along I-35 or near higher elevation areas should expect hazardous road conditions and plan extra travel time.
While general totals of 2 to 6 inches are expected across most of the region, locally higher amounts of up to 8 inches or more could develop near Lake Superior due to lake enhancement. Areas from Duluth to Hinckley and into northern Wisconsin are likely to see the storm’s heaviest impacts.
Looking ahead, light snow showers may persist into Friday with temperatures dropping into the low 20s, further complicating road conditions.
Residents are advised to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and plan accordingly. Motorists should check road conditions before travel and carry an emergency kit during the storm.
