Charleston, WV – Snowfall will blanket much of West Virginia today as a winter storm moves through the region, followed by dangerously cold weather into Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, in effect until 8 a.m. Monday. Snow totals are expected to range between 3 and 6 inches, with higher amounts in the mountainous areas. The heaviest snowfall is forecast for this afternoon and evening, creating hazardous travel conditions on major roadways such as I-64 and I-79. Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible and prepare emergency kits with food, water, and blankets in case of delays.
Tonight, the snowfall will taper off, but an arctic air mass will move into the region. Temperatures will drop into the single digits, with wind chills below zero in some areas. The National Weather Service warns that flash freeze conditions are possible overnight as wet roadways and sidewalks quickly freeze. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors or bundle up if heading outside to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.
Monday morning will bring frigid conditions, with high temperatures only reaching 16°F and wind gusts making it feel even colder. Officials expect icy roads to persist, making the morning commute dangerous. Anyone traveling should allow extra time and use extreme caution.
The cold weather will continue into Tuesday, with temperatures remaining below freezing and a slight chance of additional snow. By midweek, skies will clear, but daytime highs will only reach the upper teens.
