Detroit, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. today for parts of eastern Michigan, including the Tri-Cities and the Thumb region, as a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain moves through the area.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, bursts of snow early this morning will gradually transition into a wintry mix of sleet, snow pellets, and freezing rain around sunrise.
Snow and Ice Totals
Forecasters say the storm could produce:
- 1 to 3 inches of snow
- Isolated areas receiving up to 4 inches
- Ice accumulation up to one-tenth of an inch
As temperatures rise later in the morning, the wintry mix is expected to change to rain before precipitation ends by mid to late morning.
Travel Impacts
The biggest concern is slippery travel during the morning hours.
Drivers in the advisory area could experience:
- Snow-covered roads
- Icy patches due to freezing rain
- Reduced traction and slower travel
Officials are urging motorists to slow down and allow extra time for travel if heading out early.
Improving Conditions Later Today
As temperatures climb above freezing, conditions should improve with precipitation changing to rain and roads gradually becoming wet instead of icy.
However, forecasters recommend residents continue monitoring weather updates in case conditions change.
