GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Light snow is expected to spread across much of eastern North Dakota on Tuesday, bringing slick roads and reduced visibility before tapering off early tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.
Forecasters said the snow would be followed by increasing winds overnight into Wednesday morning, especially across the southern Red River Valley. Areas that already have snow on the ground could see patchy blowing and drifting snow, potentially affecting the Wednesday morning commute.
Snow accumulations are expected to remain light, generally around 1 to 2 inches for most locations. However, the combination of light snow and gusty winds could still lead to hazardous travel conditions. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and check updated road conditions before heading out.
Officials with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and Minnesota Department of Transportation both advised motorists to be alert for slick roads and sidewalks, especially during the early morning and evening hours.
“Even a small amount of snow combined with wind can create blowing snow and icy spots on untreated surfaces,” the weather service said. “Plan ahead for longer travel times, and check the latest updates at 511mn.org or travel.dot.nd.gov before leaving.”
The weather pattern is expected to remain cold and breezy through midweek before temperatures gradually moderate later in the week. No major snowstorms are currently forecast, but forecasters caution that lingering snow cover and wind could continue to cause minor travel impacts through Wednesday.
