East Grand Forks, MN – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for East Grand Forks and surrounding areas until 9 p.m. Friday, with gusty winds and blowing snow creating hazardous travel conditions. Northwest Minnesota is expected to experience winds up to 55 mph and light snowfall, making visibility dangerously low on highways.

According to the National Weather Service, snow totals will remain below an inch, but strong winds will make roads slippery and difficult to navigate. Motorists should drive cautiously and avoid unnecessary travel, especially on exposed roadways. Highways like US Route 2 and nearby rural roads could be particularly dangerous.

Friday’s temperatures will reach a high of 33°F before plummeting overnight to -6°F. Wind chills will make it feel even colder, increasing the risk of frostbite. Saturday brings sunny skies, but highs will remain bitterly cold at just -3°F with winds gusting up to 28 mph.

The coldest stretch arrives Sunday into Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with highs only reaching -9°F Sunday and -13°F Monday. Overnight wind chills are forecasted to drop as low as -25°F. Residents should bundle up, limit outdoor activity, and ensure pets are brought indoors.

Plan ahead for extreme cold through the long weekend. Stay updated on road conditions by calling 511 or checking the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s website.
