JACKSON, Ky. — A mix of accumulating snow and freezing drizzle is expected to impact parts of eastern Kentucky through mid-morning Tuesday, creating slick travel conditions for the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Forecasters said the heaviest snowfall will occur north of the Mountain Parkway, particularly along and north of Kentucky Highway 30, where snow bands could briefly reach rates near one inch per hour. South of that corridor, a mix of rain and freezing rain will transition to freezing drizzle before tapering off later in the morning.

The snow is forecast to gradually end from northwest to southeast between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., with lingering drizzle and slick spots expected to persist in some valleys and shaded areas. While total snowfall amounts will generally remain light—around one inch in most places—roads could still be hazardous during the morning hours, especially on untreated or elevated surfaces.

Meteorologists noted some uncertainty in how quickly the rain-to-snow changeover occurs, which could influence exact snowfall totals. “Even light accumulations of snow or freezing drizzle can make for slippery travel conditions,” the weather service said in a statement.

Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and stay alert for icy patches on bridges and overpasses.

Conditions are expected to improve by midday as temperatures slowly climb above freezing. After this system exits, forecasters expect a stretch of colder but mainly dry weather through midweek.
