Roanoke, VA – Hazardous weather conditions are impacting Virginia and parts of North Carolina tonight, with black ice and snowfall creating dangerous travel conditions. Untreated roads and walkways are particularly slick, prompting warnings for residents to stay vigilant.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook at 8:17 p.m. Saturday, cautioning against non-essential travel overnight. According to the advisory, up to 2 inches of snow fell across central and western Virginia earlier in the day, with residual snow and ice expected to linger through early Sunday morning.
Residents in areas including Roanoke, Bedford, and Floyd counties are at risk of black ice, which forms when melting snow refreezes as temperatures plummet overnight. Drivers should exercise caution, particularly on bridges and untreated surfaces, where ice accumulations are most severe.
Looking ahead, conditions will worsen midweek as bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills sweep through the region. The National Weather Service predicts subzero wind chills on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. The cold will increase risks for frostbite and hypothermia, especially for individuals who are outdoors for prolonged periods.
Local officials advise residents to monitor weather updates, limit travel during hazardous conditions, and prepare for a prolonged cold spell by securing adequate heating resources. Spotters in affected areas are encouraged to report ice conditions and snowfall totals to assist in tracking the storm’s impact.
Stay tuned for updates as conditions develop.
