New York – Snowfall is expected to create hazardous travel conditions Sunday across parts of northern New Jersey and southeastern New York, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, 3 to 5 inches of snow are forecast for Western Passaic County, New Jersey, and Orange County, New York. The advisory was extended early Sunday morning and is scheduled to expire at 12 a.m. EST tonight.
Forecasters indicate that snow will continue at times through the day, with periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered roadways likely, particularly on untreated surfaces. While snowfall intensity may vary, accumulations are expected to be sufficient to cause travel difficulties.
The National Weather Service notes there may be a lull in snowfall during the afternoon, but road conditions may remain slippery as temperatures hover near freezing. Additional snowfall later in the day could quickly re-cover treated roads, especially on secondary routes.
Impacts are expected across local roads, county highways, bridges, and overpasses, where icy patches may develop. The advisory area includes higher-elevation and rural locations where snow accumulation can occur more efficiently than in nearby urban corridors.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, particularly during the evening hours. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset as temperatures drop and road treatment effectiveness decreases.
Local Departments of Transportation recommend checking real-time road condition updates before traveling and adjusting plans if possible. While snowfall totals are not expected to reach warning criteria, travel impacts may still be significant due to timing and roadway conditions.
