Snoqualmie Pass, Washington – Drivers crossing Washington’s Cascade passes could face rapidly worsening travel conditions as up to 10 inches of additional snow continues through Tuesday afternoon, before blizzard conditions develop by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for the Cascades of southern King County and Pierce and Lewis counties, including Snoqualmie Pass, White Pass, Crystal Mountain, and Mount Rainier National Park areas. Snow totals during the advisory may reach 6 to 10 inches, creating slick roads and reduced visibility.
Conditions escalate quickly Tuesday evening when a Blizzard Warning begins at 5 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. Wednesday. Winds may gust up to 40 mph, producing blowing snow and visibility below one-quarter mile across exposed ridges and mountain highways.
Key travel routes such as Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass and U.S. 12 at White Pass could see dangerous driving conditions, especially late Wednesday when winds peak. Heavy snowfall combined with strong winds may lead to temporary road closures or long delays.
Forecasters note snow levels may briefly rise late Wednesday, bringing a short transition to rain near Snoqualmie Pass before colder air returns Thursday with more snow.
A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Wednesday evening through Friday morning, with the potential for up to 4 feet of total snow across the higher Cascades. Travelers should carry winter survival kits and limit mountain travel to emergencies as conditions intensify.
