Gatlinburg, TN – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the higher elevations of East Tennessee through 7 a.m. Tuesday, with lingering snow and gusty winds expected to impact the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
Forecasters report that an additional inch of snow is possible across the Smoky Mountains, including areas near Gatlinburg, Cades Cove, and Elkmont. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, creating pockets of blowing snow and reduced visibility at higher elevations.
Roads in and around Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as mountain passes through Blount, Sevier, and Cocke Counties, could be slick and snow-covered early this morning. Travelers are advised to use caution, especially along Newfound Gap Road and higher ridge routes.
According to the NWS, conditions should gradually improve after sunrise as snow tapers off and winds ease later in the morning.
Drivers are encouraged to check Tennessee 511 for the latest road updates and to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles when traveling in snowy conditions.
