Morristown, Tennessee — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect Thursday morning for the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, where snow and gusty winds are creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, the warning continues until 11 a.m. EST for the Blount, Cocke, and Sevier County Smoky Mountains, including Gatlinburg, Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Hartford.
Forecasters said additional snow accumulations of up to one inch are possible this morning, combined with wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour. The combination of snow, wind, and cold temperatures is expected to cause slick and icy road conditions, particularly along mountain roads and higher-elevation routes.
The National Weather Service warned that hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute, especially for travelers heading into or out of the Smokies. Early morning temperatures at higher elevations were described as severely cold, increasing the risk of icy surfaces.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve later this morning.
Motorists who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. The latest road conditions are available by calling 511.
The Winter Storm Warning is expected to expire late this morning as snowfall tapers off and conditions gradually improve.
