Elko County, NV – Residents in northern Nevada may have felt light shaking Friday morning after a series of small earthquakes struck near the Oregon and Idaho borders.

According to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, the largest tremor measured magnitude 2.9 and was recorded at 3:05 a.m. local time Friday, about 58 kilometers northeast of Valmy. The quake originated at a depth of 7.5 kilometers.

The U.S. Geological Survey and state seismic officials reported no immediate damage or injuries. Events of this size are generally considered minor, though they are often felt locally depending on depth and proximity.

Friday’s activity is part of a cluster of seismic events occurring in the remote region of Elko County, not far from the tri-state area where Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho meet. The area is known for occasional low to moderate earthquake activity tied to fault systems across the Basin and Range province.

As of Friday morning, no residents had filed “Did You Feel It?” reports with the USGS. Officials encourage anyone who experienced shaking to submit details, which help seismologists better understand regional impacts.

While the earthquakes were minor, emergency officials advise residents in the area to review earthquake preparedness plans, including securing heavy furniture and maintaining emergency kits.
