Skagway, AK – Drivers heading toward White Pass and the Klondike Highway should prepare for dangerous winter conditions tonight as a Winter Storm Warning takes effect for northern Southeast Alaska. The National Weather Service in Juneau says 12 to 17 inches of snow are expected at higher elevations between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will occur Wednesday evening, with rates between 0.7 and 1 inch per hour. Snow will lighten overnight as temperatures rise, shifting to a rain/snow mix late Thursday morning through the afternoon.
Travel along the Klondike Highway—particularly above 2,000 feet near White Pass—is expected to be very difficult, and officials advise avoiding travel unless necessary. Motorists are urged to carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, in case of road closures or delays.
Residents are encouraged to prepare properties and vehicles before conditions worsen. For the latest updates on road conditions and closures, visit 511.alaska.gov or call 511 before traveling.
