According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy J.A. Morris conducted a stop around 1:06 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, on Call Road after observing a Ford Mustang with defective equipment.
Authorities said the driver was identified as Harrison Delbert Shaffer Jr., 50, of Charleston. During the stop, a K-9 unit from the Charleston Police Department responded and alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.
Deputies reported finding a bag hidden beneath the trunk carpet containing a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, approximately 3.38 grams of a pink substance believed to be fentanyl, 5.5 grams of a white crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine, and a digital scale.
During a search incident to arrest, deputies allegedly found two additional plastic bags containing suspected methamphetamine weighing about 0.79 grams and 0.85 grams, along with $2,549 in U.S. currency.
A records check revealed Shaffer is a convicted felon for Second-Degree Sexual Assault, according to the West Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry. Court records indicate he served approximately 11 years and five months in prison. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Shaffer has been charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, and prohibited person in possession of a firearm. He was transported to South Central Regional Jail. Bond was set at $15,000 surety or cash.
