Mount Shasta Vista, CA – Two men were hospitalized early Thursday morning after a violent home invasion led to a shooting in the Mount Shasta Vista area, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they received a call around 12:07 a.m. on November 6 from a man reporting a gunshot wound. The caller, identified as Joel Hammons, 45, told dispatchers he had accidentally shot himself in the side and required urgent medical attention.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medics arrived at the Mount Shasta Vista subdivision and found Hammons and several witnesses. Witnesses alleged Hammons had unlawfully entered a home and attacked Kevin Palmer, 57, with a wooden pole, striking him multiple times in the head. During the altercation, Hammons allegedly threatened to kill others inside the residence.

In response, Ryan Edens, 28, reportedly retrieved a .22-caliber rifle and shot Hammons, fearing for the safety of those inside. Both Palmer and Hammons were transported to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta for treatment.

Deputies said Hammons was later arrested for multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, breaking and entering, and violating a restraining order. Edens was also arrested for outstanding warrants unrelated to the incident.

Authorities said the case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office or submit a report online.
