Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls has extended a Winter Weather Advisory for much of eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa through 6 p.m. Thursday, warning of slick travel from light snow and ice.
Areas under the advisory include Sioux Falls, Brookings, Yankton, Vermillion, Marshall, Worthington, and Storm Lake, with nearby counties in both Iowa and Minnesota also affected.
According to the NWS, additional snow accumulations of up to one inch and a light glaze of ice are possible, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Even though heavier precipitation has moved out, lingering slick spots will continue to pose a hazard into the evening commute.
Forecasters also report light mixed precipitation across central and north central South Dakota, including Pierre, Mobridge, and Aberdeen, where travel remains hazardous due to residual snow and ice from earlier in the day.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution on untreated surfaces. Drivers can check road updates by calling 5-1-1 or visiting sd511.org for the latest travel conditions.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing tonight, meaning any moisture will quickly refreeze and create additional icy patches.
