Sioux Falls, SD – A significant winter storm continues to affect eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa, with Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories in effect through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls.
According to NWS forecasters, snow is already falling across the region and will continue into Saturday, with the heaviest accumulations expected along and east of Interstate 29. Forecast maps show 4–7 inches common from Sioux Falls to Brookings, Madison, Pipestone, and Worthington, with localized totals reaching 8–12 inches in parts of southwest Minnesota and far northwest Iowa. Areas west toward Mitchell, Lake Andes, and Chamberlain will see lighter amounts, generally 2–5 inches.
A light glaze of ice is also possible south of Interstate 90, including areas near Vermillion, Yankton, and Sioux City. While ice amounts will remain light, even a thin glaze can quickly create slick roadways.
As winds increase Saturday, blowing and drifting snow will become a concern, especially across open areas east of the Missouri River. Gusts may reduce visibility at times and further complicate travel on rural roads and highways.
The timing graphic shows steady snowfall continuing Friday evening, increasing overnight, and tapering off gradually through Saturday afternoon. With snow already accumulating, NWS urges drivers to check current conditions and use caution if travel is necessary. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for much of the region, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Worthington, and Storm Lake. Winter Weather Advisories cover surrounding counties.
Travel reminders include reducing speed, increasing following distance, clearing all vehicle lights before driving, and avoiding unnecessary travel during the height of the storm.
