Sioux Falls, S.D. –
Residents across south central South Dakota should brace for potentially dangerous weather Wednesday evening as the National Weather Service increases the severe thunderstorm risk to a Level 2 out of 5. Forecasters expect storms to develop late Wednesday afternoon over central South Dakota and push eastward through the night, bringing threats of damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail as large as half dollars, and periods of heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the highest risk zone includes areas near Chamberlain, Winner, and Mitchell, with storms likely to be scattered but capable of producing severe impacts. While tornado risk is low, straight-line winds could bring down trees and power lines, creating travel hazards and potential outages.

Motorists should avoid driving during the peak of the storms, and residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor multiple weather alert sources. If outside, seek sturdy shelter immediately when warnings are issued.

The severe weather threat will diminish overnight, but lingering showers may continue into early Thursday morning. Additional watches or warnings are possible if conditions intensify.
