Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Strong winds sweeping across eastern South Dakota on Tuesday are creating high to very high fire danger, raising concerns for fast-spreading grass fires despite a few passing light rain showers. Officials warn that any spark could quickly turn into a difficult-to-control fire as dry fuels and gusty conditions combine during the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, wind gusts between 30 and 35 mph are expected through the day, with the highest fire danger occurring from late morning through early evening. Dry grasses and cured vegetation remain highly receptive to ignition, even with brief periods of light rainfall.

The highest risk covers much of eastern South Dakota, including Minnehaha, Lincoln, McCook, Turner, and Moody counties. Areas along I-29 and I-90, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, and Yankton, are especially vulnerable due to open fields and exposed terrain. Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning, parking vehicles on dry grass, or using equipment that could generate sparks.

Residents are urged to secure trailer chains, properly dispose of cigarettes, and report any smoke immediately. Fire danger is expected to ease later Tuesday evening as winds diminish, but authorities caution that elevated risks could return on other windy days this week.
