Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across South Dakota and neighboring states should prepare for a windy and unseasonably warm weekend, with fire weather concerns and the chance of isolated thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The Hazardous Weather Outlook, issued early Thursday by the NWS in Sioux Falls, warns of southerly winds gusting 30 to 40 mph Friday and Saturday. Combined with above-average temperatures in the 80s and 90s and low humidity, the conditions could increase the risk of grass fires, especially in areas with dry vegetation or active harvest operations.

According to the NWS, the most significant fire risk will develop during the afternoon and evening hours Friday into Saturday. “Caution should be used especially where drier grasses are located or fall harvest activities are underway,” the agency noted.

In addition, isolated thunderstorms are possible late Saturday afternoon through evening, mainly in south central South Dakota, though a stronger storm cannot be ruled out.

For Sioux Falls, the extended forecast calls for highs near 88°F Thursday, 91°F Friday and Saturday, before conditions cool into the mid-60s by Monday. Winds are expected to remain elevated through the weekend, with Saturday night gusts possibly reaching 45 mph.

Spotter activation is not expected at this time, but residents are urged to monitor updates as conditions evolve.
