Sioux Falls, SD – A freeze warning is in effect for much of eastern South Dakota and parts of southwest Minnesota, as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing for several hours tonight and again Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
Forecasters say overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, bringing the potential for widespread frost and freeze conditions. The NWS is reminding residents to take protective measures — including turning off sprinklers, disconnecting hoses, and covering outdoor faucets — to prevent damage from freezing.
Sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation should be brought inside or covered, and pets should be kept indoors if possible. The coldest readings are expected in south-central and eastern South Dakota, with some areas north of Interstate 90 dipping below 28°F.
The NWS notes that this cold stretch could effectively end the growing season across the region. Warmer daytime highs in the upper 40s and low 50s are expected to return later in the week, but overnight frost potential will remain through midweek.
