SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Drivers across eastern South Dakota woke up to patchy dense fog Wednesday morning, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less in several areas. The fog is expected to linger through mid-morning, raising concerns for the commute in and around Sioux Falls.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the low-lying fog could create rapidly changing road conditions, particularly along interstates and rural highways. Motorists are urged to slow down, leave extra room between vehicles, and use headlights to improve visibility.
The heaviest fog has been reported along stretches of Interstate 29 near Sioux Falls and northward toward Brookings, as well as portions of U.S. Highway 81. Commuters heading into the city during the early rush may encounter sudden drops in visibility.
Officials remind drivers to avoid using high beams, which can reflect off the fog and make conditions worse. Travelers should plan for extra time, especially if heading toward schools or workplaces in dense traffic corridors.
Fog is expected to lift by late morning as temperatures rise, but forecasters note that similar conditions could develop again in the coming days if overnight humidity remains high.
