Sioux Falls, SD – Strong and potentially disruptive winds are expected to impact the Sioux Falls area later this week, with the highest risk arriving Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls, confidence is increasing that northwest winds gusting over 50 miles per hour will develop early Thursday. Some isolated gusts could approach 60 mph between sunrise and midday, creating hazardous travel conditions across southeastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota.
Forecast guidance shows wind speeds ramping up quickly Thursday morning, with the strongest gusts expected between approximately 6 a.m. and noon. Winds are forecast to slowly ease by Thursday evening, but blustery conditions may persist through much of the day.
While the chance of snow remains uncertain, forecasters warn that if scattered snow showers develop, rapid drops in visibility could occur, especially in open and rural areas. Even brief bursts of snow combined with strong winds could create localized travel issues during the morning commute.
Probability maps show moderate to high chances of 50 mph or stronger wind gusts across the Sioux Falls metro, including Minnehaha County, Lincoln County, and surrounding areas. Areas west and north of the city may see the highest wind potential.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, including holiday decorations, trash bins, and lightweight furniture, ahead of Thursday. Drivers of high-profile vehicles such as semis, vans, and SUVs should be prepared for sudden crosswinds, particularly on east-west roads and exposed stretches of Interstate 90 and Interstate 29.
Forecasters stress that conditions may change quickly and advise residents to continue monitoring updated forecasts through Wednesday and Thursday morning as the event draws closer.
