Sioux Falls, SD – The season’s first measurable snowfall is on the way for southeast South Dakota and parts of northwest Iowa, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

Snow is expected to begin falling after midnight and continue through Saturday morning, with most areas picking up 2 to 3 inches of accumulation. Isolated spots could exceed 3 inches, especially near Sioux City and Storm Lake.

The heaviest snow is forecast between midnight and 10 a.m. Saturday, with light snow showers tapering off through the afternoon and evening. Forecasters warn of reduced visibility and slick roads, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces during the morning commute.

Temperatures will remain near or just below freezing through Saturday before turning sharply colder overnight. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel and stay alert to changing road conditions.

This snowfall marks the official start of winter weather across the region, with colder air expected to linger into Sunday.
