SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dangerously dry air and powerful south winds could spark fast-moving grass fires across South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota Saturday, with officials urging residents to avoid any outdoor burning.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, gusts up to 45 mph combined with near-record highs in the low 90s will create “extreme fire danger” through this afternoon. The elevated threat stretches from Rock Rapids and Spencer, Iowa, through Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Mitchell, South Dakota.
Fires could spread quickly and behave unpredictably under these conditions. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to secure equipment that may cause sparks, such as chains or mowers. Even tossing a cigarette butt could ignite a fire in the dry grass.
While a few isolated showers or storms could form late Saturday near Interstate 29, the chance of measurable rain is low. Winds will stay gusty into the evening before easing overnight.
Elevated fire danger will likely persist into Sunday before calmer, cooler air returns early next week.
