Sioux Falls, S.D. – Heavy downpours could drench parts of southeastern South Dakota and neighboring states through Thursday morning, raising concerns about flash flooding and travel delays in cities like Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, 2 to 4 inches of rain are expected across northeast Nebraska, southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, and southwestern Minnesota. Thunderstorm chances increase tonight and continue through Thursday, with isolated areas seeing even higher rainfall totals.

The main storm threat arrives Wednesday evening, bringing strong wind gusts up to 60 mph and localized flooding, especially near rivers, streams, and low-lying roads. While the risk for severe weather tonight remains low, the combination of saturated ground and continued rainfall could lead to rapid water rise in urban areas.

Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways, and residents should secure outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages. Rainfall rates could intensify during peak commuting hours Wednesday night.

Storm chances taper by Thursday afternoon as drier air moves in. However, more scattered storms are possible over the weekend.

Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect through Thursday. Additional advisories may be issued.
