Sioux Falls, S.D. – Strong overnight storms are sweeping across southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska, bringing the threat of damaging winds and large hail through 4 a.m. Monday. Residents in cities like Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Yankton are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and urged to remain weather-aware into early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 598 remains in effect until 4 a.m. CDT. The watch includes 15 counties in South Dakota and two in Nebraska, including Minnehaha, Lincoln, Union, and Dakota Counties. Storms are capable of producing wind gusts over 60 mph and hail larger than quarters, particularly in areas along the I-29 and I-90 corridors.
The watch impacts key communities such as Harrisburg, Canton, Vermillion, Madison, and North Sioux City. Local officials advise limiting travel overnight and securing outdoor items. Lightning and intense downpours may also cause isolated power outages or minor flooding in low-lying areas.
The severe threat should taper by sunrise Monday, but additional alerts may follow if storm systems persist. Stay tuned to local weather channels and NOAA radio for updates.
