Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Light snow moving across southeast South Dakota today could bring up to 1 inch for most areas, with isolated pockets nearing 2 inches along Interstate 29 and Interstate 90, potentially slowing travel.
According to the US National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, periods of light snow are expected to progress from late morning through the evening hours. While widespread heavy accumulation is not forecast, brief bursts of steadier snowfall may lead to localized higher totals.
Forecasters say most communities, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell and Yankton, are expected to see around 1 inch or less. However, where heavier bands briefly develop, snowfall amounts could approach 2 inches, particularly near major travel corridors such as I-29, I-90 and U.S. Highway 81.
Drivers may encounter temporary reductions in visibility and slick stretches of roadway as snow falls during peak travel periods. The snow is expected to taper off from northwest to southeast later this evening, gradually improving road conditions.
Officials advise motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check updated road reports before heading out. Even lighter snowfall can create isolated slick spots on bridges and overpasses.
Students, commuters and delivery drivers traveling during the afternoon and early evening hours may experience the greatest impacts as snowfall coincides with higher traffic volumes.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates throughout the day as conditions evolve and localized heavier pockets develop.
