Sioux Falls, S.D. – Strong thunderstorms are moving across South Dakota early Friday, bringing damaging winds and large hail to parts of the state before weakening near the I-29 corridor later in the morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storms will continue pushing east and southeast through the Huron and Mitchell areas between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., before approaching I-29 by mid-morning. While the system is expected to lose strength, forecasters warn of an isolated risk of 60 mph wind gusts and hail as large as ping pong balls during the early morning hours.

The most severe impacts are expected west of I-29, with communities such as Huron and Mitchell likely to experience the strongest storms. Drivers along Highway 281 and I-90 may encounter heavy rain and reduced visibility. Farther east, including Brookings, Sioux Falls, and Yankton, storms should weaken but could still deliver brief downpours and gusty winds.

Residents are urged to remain alert during the morning commute, secure outdoor items, and delay travel if storms are overhead.

Weather officials say storms should exit eastern South Dakota by late morning, with additional updates possible if redevelopment occurs.
