Sioux Falls, SD – Very strong winds combined with fresh snow are expected to create dangerous travel conditions across the Sioux Falls area today.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, northwest winds will rapidly increase late this morning, with gusts between 40 and 60 mph continuing into the afternoon. These strong winds will pick up newly fallen snow, leading to blowing snow and brief periods of near-whiteout conditions, especially in open areas.
Forecasters say visibility may drop quickly at times, making driving hazardous even where snowfall amounts are limited. The greatest risk is expected late morning through the afternoon, when wind speeds peak.
Road conditions are likely to deteriorate on Interstate 29, Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 77, and surrounding rural highways, particularly on open stretches where blowing snow can obscure lane markings. Sudden slowdowns and slide-offs are possible during brief whiteout conditions.
The National Weather Service noted high confidence in the wind forecast, increasing confidence that travel impacts will occur. Even experienced winter drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions with little warning.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Commuters, school transportation, and delivery drivers should closely monitor conditions and be prepared to delay travel if visibility drops suddenly.
