Sioux Falls, SD – Dangerous winds are expected to sweep across the region Thursday, with High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories already in place ahead of a powerful cold front arriving early in the morning.
According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls, very strong northwest winds will rapidly intensify behind the front Thursday, with the strongest winds expected from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Forecast gusts range from 55 to 60 mph, though isolated gusts could reach 70 mph, especially in exposed locations across eastern South Dakota and northwest Iowa.
These winds will be strong enough to cause hazardous travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles on east–west routes such as I-90. Blowing debris, reduced visibility, and sporadic power outages are also possible.
In addition, scattered snow showers may develop as colder air pushes in behind the front. While accumulations are expected to be light, even brief bursts of snow could quickly reduce visibility and create slick spots—especially in open areas prone to blowing snow.
Communities including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, Yankton, Huron, and Worthington fall under wind-related alerts. Areas northwest of Sioux Falls, including Lake Andes, Alexandria, and Madison, are also highlighted within the strongest wind threat zone.
Temperatures fall sharply Thursday morning with the frontal passage, reinforcing winterlike conditions through the afternoon and evening.
Forecasters urge residents to secure outdoor items, remain alert for rapidly changing weather, and delay travel during peak wind periods if possible. Updates will be issued as conditions evolve overnight into Thursday.
