Sioux Falls, SD – A winter storm is bringing widespread snow and icy conditions across southeast South Dakota and neighboring regions Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

Forecasters expect 4 to 7 inches of snowfall across most of the area through Saturday, with heavier totals of 5 to 12 inches likely in parts of southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska. Some locations southeast of Sioux City, Le Mars, and Spencer could see snowfall exceeding one foot by Saturday morning.

In addition to snow, a light glaze of ice from freezing drizzle is expected Friday afternoon and evening, particularly near the Missouri River Valley and along I-90 and US Highway 20. The mix of ice and snow will make roads slick and hazardous for travel.

Snowfall intensity is expected to taper off Saturday, though blowing and drifting snow may persist as winds increase. Motorists are urged to use caution and check the latest travel advisories before heading out.
