SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A cold, still morning grips the Sioux Empire as Halloween dawns under gray skies and a biting breeze. The quiet start won’t last long—bands of moisture are sliding east, and the first hint of snow for the season may brush parts of the region later today.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, scattered light precipitation is expected to develop by midmorning along and north of Highway 14. For much of eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota, the mix will start as snow or a rain-snow blend before changing to light rain through the afternoon. Areas along and south of I-90 are likely to see only drizzle or sprinkles, while the Buffalo Ridge and higher elevations northward could collect a dusting of snow—just enough to whiten grassy surfaces briefly.

Accumulations should stay minor, but damp roads and gusty northwest winds may briefly reduce visibility during the afternoon commute. Drivers should allow extra time, especially across rural stretches between Brookings and Marshall.

The weekend turns quieter. Saturday and Sunday both bring mostly sunny skies with highs near 45°F to 59°F and lows around freezing—crisp but comfortable for outdoor events or late harvest work.

Models hint at another push of colder air late next week, possibly setting the stage for a more organized early-November snow chance across the northern Plains. For now, though, Halloween marks South Dakota’s soft transition into its early winter rhythm.

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday—an extra hour to rest before colder mornings return.
