SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A stretch of blustery fall weather is taking hold across eastern South Dakota, with gusty northwest winds and scattered light rain showers expected through the weekend. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reports that wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph will develop this afternoon as a cold front moves through, raising localized fire danger where vegetation remains dry.
According to the NWS Sioux Falls office, light showers will move west to east today, but rainfall totals will remain minimal—around a tenth of an inch or less in most areas. Behind the front, cooler air will settle in tonight, leading to patchy frost early Sunday morning, particularly in rural areas and sheltered valleys.
The windy pattern continues into early next week. Winds could again gust above 35 mph Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures staying in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. Despite the breezy setup, skies will remain mostly sunny after Sunday morning.
Drivers on I-90 and I-29 should anticipate strong crosswinds and brief light rain this afternoon. Farmers and ranchers are urged to monitor for elevated fire danger and secure any lightweight outdoor equipment before winds pick up.
