Sioux Falls, SD – Areas of light rain will expand across the region today before colder air brings a transition to snow tonight across portions of east-central South Dakota and southwest Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls. Wintry travel conditions are expected to develop late tonight and carry into the Tuesday morning commute.

According to the NWS, rain will increase in coverage and intensity this afternoon as it lifts north. By evening and overnight, cooling temperatures will allow the rain to mix with or change completely to snow—especially near and north of U.S. Highway 14. Areas including Brookings, Madison, De Smet, Marshall, and the Buffalo Ridge in southwest Minnesota are most likely to see accumulating snow.

Snow totals are forecast to range from 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible in elevated terrain such as the Buffalo Ridge. The NWS notes that accumulation will be elevation-dependent, with lower totals in valley locations and higher totals where colder air settles more efficiently.

Snow will be most widespread between late evening and early Tuesday morning. By daybreak Tuesday, steady snow should taper off, though lingering slick spots may remain on untreated roads, bridges, and rural routes. Motorists traveling early in the morning should be prepared for reduced visibility and slushy conditions.

Today’s highs will reach the 40s before temperatures fall quickly overnight. Tuesday will remain cool with lingering clouds and patchy slickness early before conditions gradually improve.

Residents across east-central South Dakota and southwest Minnesota should monitor forecast updates and prepare for potential delays Tuesday morning.
