Sioux Falls, SD – Drivers along I-90 north of Sioux Falls are facing reduced visibility down to about one mile as wind gusts near 40 mph push fresh snow across roadways Saturday afternoon, creating sudden whiteout pockets.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, most roads across eastern South Dakota remain wet, but scattered snow showers have left stretches of pavement partially to completely snow-covered, especially along and north of the interstate. Conditions are expected to fluctuate through the afternoon as bands of snow continue moving through the region.

Localized trouble spots are developing in areas like Brookings and toward the Minnesota border, where winds are strongest and open rural roads allow snow to drift quickly. South Dakota DOT cameras show changing conditions within miles, with some highways clear while others turn slick in minutes. Drivers on I-29 and secondary highways may also encounter brief visibility drops and light accumulation.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. High-profile vehicles may struggle with crosswinds, especially on north-south routes. Keeping both hands firmly on the wheel is recommended as gusts increase.

Conditions should gradually stabilize later Saturday evening, but additional advisories remain possible if snow bands persist.
