Sioux Falls, South Dakota — Light freezing precipitation could create slick travel conditions across parts of eastern South Dakota beginning Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for portions of eastern South Dakota, western Minnesota, and northwest Iowa as a system moves through the region late Friday into early Saturday.

The advisory period is expected to begin after 3 p.m. Friday and continue until around 3 a.m. Saturday, with light wintry precipitation possible during that time.

Forecasters say precipitation amounts are expected to remain relatively light, but a glaze of ice up to about 0.2 inches may develop in some areas. In addition, snowfall accumulations may reach a light dusting to around 1 inch in spots.

Even small amounts of ice can create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.

Travel impacts may be most noticeable along major corridors including Interstate 29 through Sioux Falls and Interstate 90 across eastern South Dakota, where freezing precipitation could lead to slick pavement during the evening commute and overnight travel hours.

Meteorologists note there is still some uncertainty regarding the exact timing of precipitation and how quickly temperatures may drop, which could influence where ice forms.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions before traveling Friday evening or overnight.

While snowfall totals are expected to remain light, the potential for ice accumulation means even brief precipitation could create hazardous conditions across the region.

The advisory arrives as commuters and evening travelers move across the Sioux Falls metro area, making travel awareness important through early Saturday morning.
