Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls warns of dangerously cold conditions tonight into Thursday morning, with wind chill values dropping to between -15°F and -25°F across much of eastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota.
Although winds will decrease overnight, the lingering Arctic air mass will make it feel bitterly cold. The lowest wind chills are expected late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning, before gradually improving later in the day.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in under 30 minutes under these conditions.
The NWS also advises motorists to keep gas tanks at least half full, carry an emergency winter kit, and check on vulnerable neighbors, pets, and water pipes that could freeze in the extreme cold.
