Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Periods of light snow are expected to move across central South Dakota late tonight into Thursday, with minor accumulations and limited travel impacts anticipated, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reports that the best chance for light snow accumulation, up to around 1 inch, will be focused west of the James River. Areas farther east, including Sioux Falls, are expected to see mainly flurries to a light dusting, with little measurable accumulation.
Snow is forecast to begin overnight and continue through Thursday, with the most consistent activity occurring during the early morning hours. Forecasters indicate that blowing snow is not expected, and overall travel impacts are considered low.
Expected snowfall totals through Thursday remain modest, but slick spots may still develop, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers traveling along Interstate 29, Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 81, and South Dakota Highway 42 should remain alert for changing road conditions during the morning commute.
The National Weather Service notes that while snowfall rates will remain light, even small amounts of snow can reduce traction, particularly during colder overnight temperatures. Visibility reductions are expected to be minimal and short-lived.
Communities west of I-29, including portions of central South Dakota, have the highest likelihood of measurable snowfall, while eastern locations may see little to no accumulation.
Officials advise motorists to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and use caution when approaching intersections and ramps. Residents are encouraged to monitor road conditions and check local forecasts for updates.
For commuters, students, and early-morning workers, the timing of the snow could coincide with peak travel hours Thursday, though significant delays are not expected.
Additional updates will be issued if forecast conditions change.
