Sioux Falls, South Dakota – High to very high fire danger is expected across much of southeast South Dakota on Thursday due to gusty winds and dry conditions.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reports that northwesterly winds are forecast to gust between 25 and 35 mph. When combined with relatively low afternoon humidity levels, those conditions will elevate the risk for rapid fire spread.
The Rangeland Fire Danger Index indicates widespread high fire danger, with some locations reaching very high levels during peak afternoon hours.
Officials warn that any grass or field fire that develops could spread quickly under these conditions. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to secure trailer chains and avoid activities that could produce sparks.
For farmers, ranchers and rural residents, extra caution is advised during fieldwork and equipment use Thursday afternoon.
Fire danger is expected to decrease after sunset as winds weaken and humidity levels recover.
