Sioux Falls, SD – Flurries swirl under gray skies this morning as a wintry mix tightens its grip on eastern South Dakota. Snow and freezing rain are spreading across the Sioux Falls metro, coating roads and windshields ahead of a sharp December cooldown that could make travel hazardous well into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. Mixed precipitation could bring up to 3 inches of snow and around one-tenth of an inch of ice, enough to create slick and potentially dangerous driving conditions along I-29 and Highway 42.
Winds from the southeast will gradually shift north tonight, ushering in Arctic air that will send temperatures plunging into the single digits. By Saturday morning, wind chills could drop between –15° and –30°F, making outdoor exposure unsafe without proper layers. The icy setup follows several days of active weather across the Upper Midwest, where a broader system continues to sweep east toward Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin through the weekend.
Meteorologists say another wave of light snow is likely Friday night into Saturday, adding another 1–2 inches before skies finally clear. Even then, bitter cold will dominate, keeping highs near 17°F through Sunday.
