Sioux Falls, SD – A wintry mix of snow and ice is expected to impact travel across eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota beginning late Wednesday night and continuing through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls.
Forecasters warn that light icing and 1 to 3 inches of snow are likely in parts of southeast South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton, with the most significant impacts expected during the Thursday morning commute.
The latest outlook indicates that icing may create slick conditions on untreated roads, especially before sunrise Thursday. By late morning, the system will transition to accumulating snow, tapering off by early evening. “At least minor travel impacts are likely, with some areas seeing moderate impacts during peak travel times,” meteorologists said.
Temperatures will hover near freezing through the morning, increasing the likelihood of freezing drizzle and light snow accumulation. Areas farther east toward Worthington, MN, may see slightly higher snow totals nearing 3 inches.
Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling, allow extra time, and use caution on bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first. The NWS also reminds travelers that changing storm tracks could alter where the heaviest ice and snow occur.
