Sioux Falls, SD – Drivers across Sioux Falls and the surrounding region should prepare for hazardous travel conditions Sunday as snow and powerful winds move into eastern South Dakota.

According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST Sunday. The system is expected to bring up to one inch of snow, with wind gusts reaching 40 to 55 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow across the region.

Travel impacts are expected along Interstate 29, Interstate 90, and rural roadways throughout Minnehaha County and the greater Sioux Falls metro area. Officials warn that visibility could drop to as low as one-half mile at times, especially in open and rural areas prone to blowing snow.

The advisory spans a wide area, including parts of eastern and south-central South Dakota, northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and northeast Nebraska. Nearby communities such as Brandon, Harrisburg, Tea, and Canton are also expected to see difficult driving conditions.

While snowfall totals may remain modest, the National Weather Service emphasized that strong winds will be the primary concern, potentially causing sudden whiteout conditions over short distances. Gusty winds could also lead to isolated tree damage.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check current road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
