Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Winter weather is impacting much of eastern South Dakota today as snow and strong winds move across the region, creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a cold front is pushing through the area, bringing snow and gusty winds throughout the day. Snowfall amounts are generally expected to range between 0.5 and 3 inches, with locally higher totals possible near Buffalo Ridge.
Forecasters say wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph will significantly reduce visibility at times, especially in open areas and along east–west roads. The combination of snowfall and strong winds may lead to blowing and drifting snow, making travel difficult, particularly eastward toward Minnesota and Iowa.
Most snowfall is expected to end late Sunday, though minor blowing and drifting snow could persist into Monday morning as winds gradually ease. The National Weather Service warns that even light snowfall can become hazardous when combined with strong winds.
Drivers are urged to check road conditions before traveling, allow extra time to reach destinations, and be prepared for rapidly changing visibility. Officials emphasize the importance of using caution, especially on rural highways and exposed roadways.
For commuters, students, and travelers across the Sioux Falls region, today’s winter weather may significantly impact travel plans and road safety.
Additional updates will be issued by the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
