Sioux Falls, SD – Dense fog is impacting travel across parts of southeast South Dakota and surrounding areas this Christmas morning, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory through midday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, areas of dense fog will persist early this morning, with visibility reduced to as low as one-quarter mile at times. Forecasters noted that visibility may change rapidly while driving, increasing the risk for hazardous travel conditions.
The Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through noon CST, with conditions expected to gradually improve from west to east, particularly west of Interstate 29. In addition to fog, slick spots are possible where temperatures remain below freezing, especially on untreated roads.
Forecast graphics highlight widespread fog across the region, including parts of southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota. The National Weather Service urged drivers to slow down, allow extra following distance, and use low-beam headlights when traveling in fog.
Officials also encouraged motorists who encounter hazardous road conditions to report them when safe to do so, while remaining prepared for rapidly changing conditions during the morning hours.
Travelers heading out early on Christmas Day are advised to remain alert until fog dissipates later this morning.
