Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Drivers across central and southeastern South Dakota should prepare for difficult travel conditions and scattered power outages as wind gusts up to 50 mph sweep through the state this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT Wednesday for counties including Beadle, Gregory, Aurora, and Davison. Sustained northwest winds between 25 and 35 mph, with occasional gusts nearing 50 mph, are expected to impact high-profile vehicles and unsecured outdoor items.
Tree limbs may break, and weakened structures like fences or signage could be damaged. Officials warn that a few isolated power outages are possible, especially in open or rural areas. Residents should avoid parking under trees and secure patio furniture, trampolines, and garbage bins.
Communities from Jerauld to Charles Mix County may also experience brief service interruptions and blowing dust along roads such as Highway 281 and Interstate 90. The winds are being driven by a fast-moving cold front cutting across the region.
Winds are expected to ease late tonight, but NWS says further advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
