Sioux City, IA – A combination of snow and strong winds is expected to create hazardous travel conditions in and around Sioux City on Sunday, particularly along major highways.

According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST Sunday for northwest Iowa and surrounding areas. Snowfall totals are forecast to reach up to one inch, but wind gusts as high as 55 mph could significantly worsen road conditions.

The greatest impacts are expected along Interstate 29, which runs through Woodbury County and connects Sioux City with South Dakota and Nebraska. Blowing and drifting snow may lead to quick, localized whiteouts, especially in open areas and on rural stretches of highway.

The advisory also includes nearby communities such as South Sioux City, North Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff, Le Mars, and Storm Lake, impacting a large portion of the Siouxland region.

Forecasters note that visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances, catching drivers off guard. Strong winds could also cause minor tree damage and make high-profile vehicles more difficult to control.

Drivers are urged to delay unnecessary travel, reduce speed, and monitor real-time road conditions through Iowa 511 before departing.

Snow showers are expected to taper off Sunday evening, though lingering slick spots may continue overnight.
