DULUTH, Minn. — A quick-moving cold front Friday is expected to deliver a burst of very strong west to northwesterly winds along Minnesota’s North Shore, with gusts topping 45 mph and a chance of 60 mph near Silver Bay, prompting a High Wind Watch, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
In a Wednesday update, the weather service said the strongest winds are expected Friday afternoon into Friday night, with a 6- to 9-hour period of intense gusts developing late Friday afternoon through early overnight behind the front. Forecasters said wind gusts in excess of 45 mph are expected along the North Shore.
The agency highlighted a 50% to 70% chance of gusts reaching 60 mph for Silver Bay and locations northeastward along the North Shore, where the High Wind Watch has been issued. Coastal areas are typically most exposed to strong west and northwest winds, especially when the wind aligns with terrain and shoreline features.
A timing graphic shared by the Duluth office emphasized that the highest-impact period will be relatively short but potent, with the strongest gusts clustering in the late-day and evening hours Friday before easing later at night.
For residents and travelers, the main concerns include difficult driving for high-profile vehicles on exposed stretches of highway, isolated power issues if tree limbs come down, and hazardous conditions near the Lake Superior shoreline. Outdoor items that can blow around should be secured ahead of the peak wind window, and anyone planning to be on the water should be prepared for rapidly building waves and dangerous conditions.
The weather service advised people along the North Shore to monitor updated forecasts as the cold front approaches, since small shifts in timing and wind direction can change where the strongest gusts set up Friday.
